What Is Holiness?
Holiness is a descriptive word that describes a space that is set apart for God. Please do not confuse this with sanctification—sanctification is a process of making one holy. Holiness is one term that belongs to God only, but through the Spirit we have inherent it. You can never be holy by yourself. It takes a lot and it requires the help from the Holy Spirit.
Holiness is associated with God’s presence and perfection. Do you consider yourself a perfect being? Alone, of course not—but thru Christ you are perfect and purified 24/7. Again, do not confuse purity and holiness—purity is the absence of impurities, while holiness describes something that is sacred or set apart for a divine purpose. For you to be holy, you have to be purified first.
Why Should We Be Holy?
We are called to be holy because our Father is holy. I cannot stress this enough—we are to mimic God, just as we adapt habits or small things done by those who are around us. If our Creator identifies as holy, who are we to identify otherwise?
Being holy is being set apart to be used by God effectively. Being holy makes you an investment in the house of the Lord because you have opened more space for Him to use you. I am so glad that we do not have to travel this road by ourselves—cause where would we even start to make ourselves holy? We are made holy because we have the Holy Spirit within.
2 Peter 1:3 tells us that we have everything pertaining to a godly life. A godly life is a holy life. We have all the spiritual gifts we need to live a life that glorifies God, why then are we still struggling? Is it because of our ignorance or arrogance? Or maybe let’s also add lack of knowledge to the list so that y’all could relate.
Now why should we be holy? Because it is the will of God that we be purified of all impurities and set apart for His own use. We get to see this in:
“For this is the will of God, that you be sanctified [separated and set apart from sin]: that you abstain and back away from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor [being available for God’s purpose and separated from things profane],”— 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 AMP
Being holy builds capacity for God to fully manifest in us and complete us, so that when Christ comes back we are found complete and blameless. The Lord is at work in you who believe, and He shall bring it to full completion. As the Word of God says in Colossians 3:11, He is constantly renewing us in His own image to bring us to His full knowledge of Himself.
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamaged—consecrated to Him—set apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. [24] Faithful and absolutely trustworthy is He who is calling you [to Himself for your salvation], and He will do it [He will fulfill His call by making you holy, guarding you, watching over you, and protecting you as His own].”— 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 AMP
Time for Introspection
I cannot emphasize holiness enough—this has been heavy on me for some time now, so I wanna challenge you to take some time and do a little introspection. Are you living a life that pleases God? While I bet many of us said no—because it is impossible to please God on our own. We are reconciled and brought back to Him by the blood of Jesus.
“Yet Christ has now reconciled you [to God] in His physical body through death, in order to present you before the Father holy and blameless and beyond reproach— [23] [and He will do this] if you continue in the faith, well-grounded and steadfast, and not shifting away from the [confident] hope [that is a result] of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven,”
— Colossians 1:22-23 AMP
Let us then give Him full control this week and see how things will turn out for us. God is calling you back to your destined glory, He is calling you back to your priesthood-ship, He is crying for you to come back to Him—all you have to do is yield to the Holy Spirit. Just repent and turn away from seasonal worldly pleasures.
Holiness requires humility, surrender, and a willingness to align our lives with God's purposes. Join me on this journey as we strive for holiness and God’s will in our daily lives.
Practical Tips for Walking in Holiness
So how do you practically walk in holiness every day? Here are some real-life tips to help you stay on track:
2. Pray Without Ceasing: Constant communion with God keeps your spirit in check. The more you talk to Him, the more your heart stays aligned with His.
3. Practice Self-Control: Discipline your body and your desires. This is not always easy, but it is necessary. Say “no” to anything that pulls you away from God, no matter how small.
4. Watch Your Circle: Who you hang around matters. Holiness is hard to walk in if you’re constantly surrounded by voices that normalize sin.
5. Flee from Temptation: Don’t play games with sin. If you know something tempts you—don’t entertain it. Run! Holiness is preserved by wisdom.
6. Stay in Repentance: Repentance is not a once-off event; it’s a lifestyle. Keep checking your heart. Be quick to confess and realign with God.
7. Live for an Audience of One: Don’t live to please people. Holiness will make you unpopular—but it will make you powerful in God.
As we wrap up this reflection on holiness, I want you to remember this one thing — you are not alone in this journey. You are not expected to do this in your own strength. The Holy Spirit is your helper, your guide, and your strength. Whatever you’re facing, whatever you're trying to overcome — remember you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). He is your source, your sustainer, and your sanctifier. Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). You are not without help. You are not without hope. You are not without power.
